My Dad Is Kind Of Superstitious
by: kevin14

Yoong: Hey, Wen Hao!
Hao: Wei Yoong! All right, mate?

Yoong: Yeah, good. Where are you heading?
Hao: I went downtown to buy my mum some cooking ingredients, she's going to make me vegetable soap tonight, and I'm meeting Woon Li and Zeing Seng at a cafe later. What about you?

Yoong: I see... I'm going to the public library to find more information for my school project, you know... I need some other information outside the books. But... why do you look unhappy?
Hao: Well... That is a long story. I can't tell you here. Would you like to follow me to the cafe and I'll tell you there.

Yoong: Um... Since I'll hand up the school project in April, OK! I'll come with you.
Hao: That's good. Let's get a move on, they are waiting for us at the moment.

(After 10 minutes, both of them arrive to the cafe.)

Yoong: Hey guys! You feel surprise to see me.
Li & Seng: Oh... Nice seeing you again! Wei Yoong... and nice to see you too, Wen Hao.

Hao: Hello my friends. Um...
Li: So what else did your father say to you? Besides telling you about opening an umbrella indoors would bring bad luck.

Yoong: What? What did you say just now? Opening an umbrella would bring bad luck?
Li: Yes, that was unbelievable. Say something Wen Hao.

Hao: (Wait a second) You know... My dad's kind of superstitious and he always tell me not to do this, not to do that. That's annoying!
Yoong: Well, I think you should tell him your feelings. Tell him life has changed now.

Hao: I did! Though he jumped all over me and said I was not respecting him. Now, I've to say sorry to my dad before the night. Everytime was like that...
Li: Oh... We are so sorry to hear about that.

Seng: Let's come back to the superstitions, I do still remember my grandmother had once told me the idea of 'touching wood'. In ancient times, many people believed that evil spirits lived in trees, and that they could come down into the earth. But if someone touched the tree, then the spirit would not be able to come out - that's why people 'touch wood', to keep the evil spirits away.

Li: Yes, I've heard that before. I don't think it's true though. Another superstition is the black cats, but it's more complicated. Some people believe they are good luck, and others believe they are bad luck. Black cats were usually a witch's pet - and witches were definitely bad luck! However, fishermen's wives sometimes used to keep a black cat at home to prevent an incident at sea, and so black cats were believed to be valuable and were often stolen.

Yoong: Hey! You guys seem to know the superstitions very well.
Hao: They read a lot of books and theirs grandparents used to tell them a lot about it.

Yoong: Understand. What else do you know?
Seng: There's a superstition about (spill salt)². You should take a little of the salt and throw it over your left shoulder. This is because it was thought that the Devil is always waiting behind your left shoulder, so if you throw some salt there, it will go in his eye - and that will bring you good luck!
Yoong: Hahaha!!! That was ridiculous! Do you believe in them completely?
Li: No, not really. But it's actually very hard to know where, when and how superstitions started.

Seng: Yes, that was too right! I have ever read several superstitions on a magazine, but sorry, I don't have time to tell you now, I have got to go...
Li: Oh... I don't notice that it is late. I have to go too!

Yoong: OK! Tell me more about the superstitions when I see you next time.
Li: And Wen Hao, don't be sad, everything's going to be fine.

Hao: Alright, thanks. Take care guys, good bye!
Yoong & Li & Seng: Bye bye!
